Interesting Examples of Lame Excuses

  1. Mommy calls for Student A
Student A attended very few classes during the semester. Student A missed the final because she wasn't there when we discussed a new final schedule that would allow the class to use computers for reference. Student A's mom called me to complain. She said that her daughter was going through some hard times and should be given a break. The final wouldn't have made any difference, as Student A hadn't turned any other work either.
    SOLUTION:
    - Be responsible for your own education
    - Everyone has "hard times."
    - If you have a real disability or family emergency, these must be documented to receive any accommodations.
  2. Roommate in crisis
Student B claimed that he couldn't complete the semester's work because his roommate was going through some tough times. Being a good friend is commendable, but that doesn't qualify as a family emergency. Good try, but no prize!
  3. Can't Find the Time to Get Together with Group Project Team because of Sports
Student C was in a UM sports program. When it came time to get ready for a group presentation, the group could not find an agreable time for everyone to meet. An excuse as asked because of sports.
    SOLUTION:
    - Sports aren't the only thing that can cause scheduling problems for groups to meet. Many students have full time jobs and families too.
    - If you have a situation with little discretionary time, start building your team and making plans as early as possible. This excuse is usually from someone who couldn't get a team together within the last week before the project was due.
